Balazaring names have two components, the first or birth name which is given by the senior female clan member at or close to the time of birth, this is the only name which the child will have until there initiation into adulthood.

They are usually traditional Balazaring names and it is rare for the same name to be used twice for children of the same clan.

The 2nd part is there spirit or given name which is given by the clan ancestors at the point of initiation. This name will reflect one or more of the following things;

• A character trait of the person
• A trait of the clans totems
• An action or deed the youngster has performed in the rights of initiation
• A fate the ancestors foresee, or desire for the initiate
• The standing of the initiate with the clan ancestors

It is considered extreme bad manners for the living to change that name or give another one, and to do so will usually invoke some aspect of clan discipline.  However it is not uncommon for the clan ancestors to change a given name in the sacred time rights each year to reflect deeds done and fates revealed.

It is not unknown for names of poor honour to be given one year to be atoned for over the next year and the person to receive a redeemed name after they have changed there habits. This is a subtle form of clan punishment often used on clan members who are not contributing enough to the wellbeing of the clan.

Strangely shaman are able to ignore this cultural rule regarding spirit names and name themselves as they wish.

Authors Notes:

I worked the male given names from patterns I could develop from  the list of Balazaring names found in Griffin Mountain.

Due to low numbers of women’s names in the Griffin Mountain sourcebooks I had to look for other sources for women’s given names. I decide the men’s names did have a somewhat Slavic feel to them, so I pilfered Polish women’s names and created patterns and deviations for there. I then added some of the male Balazaring prefixes to the female polish  suffixes in trying  to create a pattern of names which  seems like a cohesive list of cultural names.
